K.C. Venugopal, AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka, on Thursday said the party is not underestimating the popularity of the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party as the next year’s State Legislative Assembly elections will be fought between two rival national parties. Mr. Venugopal, who chaired meetings with divisional-level Congress leaders and legislators at the party office here on Thursday, said the BJP has been indulging in divisive politics and polarisation of society on communal lines. “How can we underestimate the BJP? We are not overconfident too. But we are ready to face any challenge from the BJP to win the elections.” He said the Congress’ major rival was the BJP.
Booth-level committees
The Congress leader claimed that 80% of booth-level committees have been formed and the rest would be formed in a week’s time. Dissatisfied with the performance of some of the block-level committees, Mr. Venugopal instructed the district congress chiefs to revamp committees if they were ineffective.
Replying to a question on BJP president Amit Shah calling the Siddaramaiah government the most corrupt in the country, the Congress MP said Mr. Shah who managed to pay bribe in the recently held elections to Rajya Sabha from Gujarat has no moral right to speak on the State government.
Performance assessed
Mr. Venugopal also a chaired a meeting with Ministers and top Congress leaders at the Exotica Resort near Devanahalli and assessed the performance of Ministers.
