Irked by the alleged inordinate delay in completion of the improvement works on the Bonakal road under the Municipal Corporation limits, CPI members on Thursday laid a siege on the main road at Ambedkar Centre here demanding faster completion of the road works.
The protesters blocked the main road, bringing traffic to a virtual standstill during rush hour.
They displayed banners and shouted slogans in protest against the alleged indifference of the contractor concerned to the daily ordeal of the road users.
Addressing the demonstrators, the CPI district secretary B. Hemantha Rao alleged that the inordinate delay in completion of improvement and widening works on the Bonakal main road was subjecting the motorists to a nightmarish experience in commuting on the ramshackle road. He demanded that stern action should be taken against the contractor and the officials concerned for their alleged laxity in executing the road works. He also sought speedy completion of the works on Allipuram road to ease traffic problems in the town. Floor leader of the CPI in Khammam Municipal Corporation George Clement and others addressed the demonstrators.
Scores of vehicles got stranded in the traffic jam due to the road blockade. The police removed the protesters from the road.
