Air Canada has announced it will operate a year-round non-stop service between Melbourne and Vancouver beginning 3 June 2018.
 
The news follows the airline’s decision made in May to introduce a seasonal service running from 1 December 2017 to 4 February 2018.
 
The airline will operate three weekly services departing Melbourne at 9:40am each Tuesday, Friday and Sunday carrying travellers on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. There will also be three flights per week departing Vancouver at 10:45pm each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
 
Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Simon Gandy said the latest announcement shows the strength in the route coming just months after the airline announced its first seasonal service from Melbourne.
 
“We’re delighted with Air Canada’s decision to expand its seasonal service into a year-round offering which reflects the popularity of the route with our holidaymakers,” said Mr Gandy.
 
“We could see many of our travellers were excited to visit Vancouver for the northern winter season and it’s great to now facilitate travel well beyond the ski season.”
 
“Air Canada’s non-stop service is significant for Melbourne Airport as the only carrier connecting Melbourne to Vancouver. This will not only benefit Victorians but also Tasmanian and South Australian travellers who can take advantage of the reduced connection time compared to other transport hubs.”
 
“At Melbourne we’re experiencing unprecedented growth in international passenger traffic, just last month we celebrated 100 consecutive months of growth in international passenger numbers, with a 6.9 per cent increase compared to July 2016. The increase in demand for travel in and out of Melbourne continues to underpin the need for more runway capacity – particularly during the airport’s morning and afternoon peaks.”
 
“The more airlines we welcome and new destinations we launch will ultimately result in more competition and eventually lower fares for our travellers.”
 
Air Canada Director Sales, Asia-Pacific, Lee Poh Kait said Air Canada will operate the Melbourne-Vancouver route using its state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which offers passengers a choice of three cabins: International Business Class (featuring the airline’s next generation lie flat pod), Premium Economy Class and Economy Class.
 
“The new Melbourne service is timed to connect to and from domestic flights from Adelaide, Hobart and Perth operated by Air Canada's codeshare partner Virgin Australia,” said Mr Lee.
 
“The addition of Melbourne is part of a strategic broadening of Air Canada's international network from Vancouver.”
