Jodhpur’s Umaid Hospital has terminated the services of a doctor and transferred another after a video emerged of the two arguing while operating on a pregnant woman. The video from Tuesday shows the two doctors, identified as Assistant Professor Dr Ashok Nanival and Anaesthesiology Professor M L Tank, arguing and threatening each other.
Dr Nanival, in green scrubs, is heard telling Tank in blue scrubs, “Arey kis galatfehmi me ho, salta dunga toh… (what delusion are you in, I’ll have you ‘taken care’ of).” As the argument ensues, Tank is heard saying, “Tu apni aukat me reh (you stay within your limits),” as other doctors try to calm them both.
“Dr Nanival’s services have been terminated, while Dr Tank has been transferred to Mathura Das Mathur hospital here,” Jodhpur’s Chief Medical Health Officer S S Choudhary said on Wednesday.
Umaid hospital superintendent Dr Ranjana Desai said, “The woman in the video, and the baby she delivered, are fine but the baby of another woman, who had undergone a C-section on an operation table nearby, died. However, the newborn’s death is not linked to the argument as the patient was on operation table within three hours of her admission,” Desai said.
Dr Desai said that the woman, whose baby died, hailed from Uttar Pradesh. She and his husband had come to the Jodhpur hospital for the delivery. “Their first baby was delivered in this hospital so they came from Uttar Pradesh to get their second baby delivered here too. The woman was in fetal distress,” Desai said. She added that the administration is still inquiring as to which district the couple hailed from.
“The woman, whose baby died, had already been operated upon 2-3 hours before the said video,” Chief Medical and Health Officer (CHMO) Choudhary claimed. He said that the argument started over the delay in admitting patients, but an investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of the argument.
“This type of behaviour is certainly not acceptable. We have taken action against them and a detailed investigation is also underway. I was in the hospital till 1 am recording the statements of all concerned and we will see what more can be done so that such incidents are not repeated,” Desai, who is now heading the investigation committee, said.
