The government is going to extend the anti-dumping duty on stainless steel across the value chain of product manufacturing.
Speaking to journalists, Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Aruna Sharma, said, "The Bureau of India Standard norms are only for stainless steel sheets therefore the industry is able to import semi-finished goods lower than that standard. We will tweak the rules in 10-15 days under which if the sheets have a BIS standard you will not be able to import anything below that quality."
BusinessLine had reported on August 13, that domestic steel manufacturers had alleged that importers are circumventing the anti-dumping duty levied on steel products.
This was possible because the entire value chain of steel product manufacturing has not been covered under the anti-dumping duty norms.
In May this year, the Finance Ministry had imposed retrospective anti-dumping duties on some steel products from Brazil, Russia, China, Korea, Japan and Indonesia. An official statement had said the duty will be effective for five years from August 8, 2016. In the anti-dumping order, a new duty has been imposed on 47 products, ranging from $478 to $561 a tonne.
