Heavy rains in Mumbai has brought life in the city to a standstill and the situation likely to get worse as more downpour is expected in the next 48 hours. The rainfall has affected transport facilities in the city, with many local trains getting cancelled and buses and cars stuck in badly water-logged areas. Authorities, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and disaster management teams are monitoring the situation.
Most people returning from offices have found it difficult to reach their homes due to heavy traffic as many roads in Mumbai have submerged due to the rains. Many offices in Mumbai have asked their employees to leave early from work considering the flooded roads. The Harbour Line (from CST to Navi Mumbai) and Central Line (from CST to Kasara and Karjat) are shut, while most trains are running late.
Milan and Andheri subways have been shut due to water-logging, while traffic has been affected in Andheri, Wakola, Film City junction, Santacruz and Worli Sea Link. Traffic has been slowed down in Ghatkopar east, Jogeshwari after some trees fell due to the rains.
The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has claimed that the situation is under control, but the visuals from Mumbai suggest otherwise. Electricity has been affected in some areas of Mumbai due to transmission rooms that are flooded, according to India Today TV report. The Mumbai disaster management team has advised people to stay indoors and not venture out.
The Mumbai team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on alert, while more units of NDRF have been called from Pune to Mumbai. The rains in Mumbai are likely to continue till Wednesday, the Met Department has suggested. "Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall expected within 48 hrs, and isolated heavy rainfall expected in North Konkan," K S Hosalikar, deputy director general, Met department.
