Navi Mumbai: The Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has invited Ganesh mandals to participate in a competition to create awareness about solid waste management through the tableaux at their pandals.
“The competition aims to create awareness about waste segregation. We decided to tap into the creativity of Ganesh mandals,” said Municipal Commissioner Sudhakar Shinde.
He said the competition is a part of the Swachh Panvel project. “Under the project, we first set the target to make Panvel open defecation-free, which we have achieved. Now, we are targeting solid waste management,” said Mr. Shinde.
At present, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) handles the solid waste management in the city. Before the PCMC takes over the work, it wants to educate citizens on the importance of waste segregation.
Mr. Shinde said, “We have informed the 300-odd Ganesh mandals in our six zones about the competition. A team of 10 people will visit the pandals and take pictures and videos. The best three will be awarded prizes.”
The winning entry will be awarded ₹25,000, while second and third prize winners will get ₹15,000 and ₹5,000, respectively.
