Police officers had forcibly removed them from their house last week

An aged couple from Thripunithura who was recently evicted from their house over a loan default met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Ernakulam Guest House here on Monday.

Despite his hectic schedule, Mr. Vijayan interacted with Raman Korangattu, 77, and Vilasini, 70, for around 15 minutes, during which he asked them about their problems. They were accompanied by their son Dineshan, daughter-in-law Maya and grandchildren, Manasi and Nanma.

The couple was able to move back to their house, following the intervention of the Chief Minister.

When the couple raised concerns about them being evicted again, the Chief Minister assured them that they would be allowed to live in their house and would not be evicted.

A group of police officers from the Maradu station had forcibly evicted the frail couple last week from their house located at Jawahar Nagar near the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway.

The couple had availed a loan of ₹1.5 lakh from the Thripunithura Housing Cooperative Society in 2006 for the construction of a house. When they defaulted repayment, the bank initiated revenue recovery proceedings and attached their house situated on a two-cent plot. The attached property was later auctioned off to a private individual for ₹5 lakh, who, in turn, sought the help of the police to evict the couple.
