Playing their first Test in over a decade, Day 1 of the first Test saw Bangladesh’s spinners claim two quick wickets after they were dismissed for 260 runs. Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Pat Cummins took three wickets each to wrap Bangladesh’s innings despite the 155-run partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan. Mehedi Hasan and Shakib scalped a wicket each in the final moments of the session. Usman Khwaja was run out, as Australia concluded Day 1 at 18/3 at stumps.

But Mehedi struck in the third over of the day as he bowled the Australian skipper for 8 runs, reducing Australia to 33/4. After losing Smith early, Renshaw and Handscomb have steadied Australia’s innings. However, Bangladesh bowlers have struck at regular intervals as Australia’s struggle against spin continues. Visitors lost Wade right after the lunch as Mehedi claimed his third wicket.
