The box-office performance stayed on the expected lines this weekend. The clutter of movies proved to be a nightmare for ‘A Gentleman’ whereas Babumoshai Bandookbaaz performed decently at the box-office.
The high budgeted ‘A Gentleman’ took a beating at the box-office because of all the odd and unexpected reasons. Right from the Haryana riots to the Southern rains, everything worked against the film. It all turned out to be a series of unfortunate events, to say the least for the Sidharth Malhotra starrer. Amidst all, what got stuck was a probable money spinner at the box-office.
A Gentleman opened on a lower note on Friday (25th August). The film collected Rs 4.04 crore on day-1. Saturday and Sunday were no party either for the film. A Gentleman showed very minimal growth over the next two days. The film collected Rs 4.36 crore on Saturday and close to Rs 5 crore on Sunday, ending the first weekend with Rs 13.40 crore. With aggressive promotions, hard hitting action and commercial elements in the trailer, A Gentleman was expected to have a big opening at the box-office. Though, the film engaged in some decent reviews and average word of mouth, the numbers clearly don’t do justice.
The Raj-DK film was made at a budget of over Rs 50 crore. The sad reality with A Gentleman is the fact that the movie will wind up in less than Rs 30 crore at the box-office. The makers might not face huge losses due to the music and television rights, but the dismal box-office performance will definitely hurt. The film will have a tough run in week-2 due to the release of Ajay Devgn’s Baadshaho and Ayushmann Khurrana’s Shubh Mangal Savdhan.
The other release of the week is Babumoshai Bandookbaaz. The low budgeted affair is performing decently at the box-office, considering the production and promotion cost of just Rs 5 crore involved. BB collected Rs 2.05 crore on day-1. The film stayed on the same lines on Saturday and Sunday, with Rs 2.41 and Rs 2.8 crore respectively. The film ended the weekend with Rs 7.2 crore coming in.
Looking at the trend, BB is expected to close up with Rs 13-14 crore. The amount may not look very promising, but looking at the budget, the makers will rake in a profit percentage of 170-200 per cent. Big numbers for a small film!
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz has not been well received by the critics. There are basically poor to average reviews flowing in. What’s working for the film is Nawaz’s cult. The ability of Nawaz to deliver a gangster role with ace is quite known and is probably the factor of BB performing decently. After a decent weekend, the film is expected to perform well in the weekdays.
