Smita and Threeory present a fusion version of ‘Mahaganapathim’, their latest in a series of contemporary devotionals

A spiritual rock fusion single ‘Mahaganapathim’ is the latest track to emerge from collaboration between Hyderabad-based band Threeory and singer Smita.

The track is an attempt to make devotional songs appeal to a younger audience, and has been composed without tampering with the essence of the popular sloka. “Music is not governed by rules and as musicians, we can experiment with purity of thought,” believes Smita.

In February this year, Smita and Threeory partnered for the first time to present their fusion numbers live at the Gudisambaralu event. “I was impressed by Threeory’s work and felt it would be good to team up with a band that understood music and will recreate music, not just play it out like an orchestra. They too liked my work and felt we could try something together,” she says.

The idea is to launch a single for every festival and they began with Ganesh Chathurti. “With this, we want to break the myth that spiritual songs are very serious,” she says. Smita and Threeory were bolstered by the fact that Smita’s earlier single for Shivaratri clocked in 1.6 million views. “There is a good market for spiritual fusion” says Smita.

The ‘Mahaganapathim’ video features Smita and Threeory band members, has keyboard by Mark Talur, drums by Tarun, violin by Sai, cinematography by Ravi Yadav, costumes by Shravan Kummar and is choreographed by Vijay.

They are working on a new music video for Dasara as well.

Smita is also launching her music label ‘Soundrama’ (a coming together of sound and drama) to collate all her music productions under one umbrella.

Taking this collaborative work further, they released the ‘Mahaganapathim’ track to coincide with Ganesh Chathurti festivities.
