As many as 10 cases have been registered over the last week

Members of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) have stepped up their vigil on the entry and exit of cattle in the city as the festive season approaches. As many as 10 cases under the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act and other sections of the IPC have been lodged with the police over the last week against several people for transporting cattle illegally to slaughterhouses.

They also reported four sheds in various parts of the city that were housing 2,000 heads of cattle and camels.

“Despite providing evidence, the city police is not taking any action,” allege AWBI members.

AWBI officer Shivani Sharma said that initially the police were cooperative and helped them register FIRs.

Additional Commissioner of Police (east) Seemanth Kumar Singh denied the allegations. “The police are taking up the cases as per the law. There is no question of negligence or laxity as alleged,” he said.

Alleging an increase in illegal cattle trade and slaughter, Ms. Sharma said that the AWBI will be taking up the issue with the authorities concerned.
