Almost all kids with some sort of musical sense will aspire to become musicians and singers when they grow up. But it takes a whole lot of guts, commitment and support to follow up on those dreams. Two childhood friends stand out from the lot with a success story of dreams coming true that comes calling to Bengaluru this weekend.
Zephyrtone, that comprises DJ and music producer Shayan and singer-songwriter Zephyr, is a unique, teen house, music-producing duo from Pune that is creating a buzz headlines with their energetic sets blended neatly with live vocals that make every performance a total entertainer.
Coming to the city for a gig, organised by Baleno Wicked Weekends at Big Brewsky on August 26, the duo chats about their passion and process to make their childhood aspiration a reality.
“We’re thoroughly excited about playing in Bengaluru. We are performing here for the second time. It’s one of our favourite cities to play in. The Bengaluru music crowd is all about serious energy from start to finish. They really dance like they mean it!” says an enthusiastic Zephyr.
Having tasted success with their debut EP Shooting Stars, that puts together a whole lot of songs, versions and mixes into one groovy four-track sonic offering, Zephyrtone has shared stage with names like Porter Robinson and Cole Ingram.
Shayan says their music’s biggest takeaway is that they are unique. “Zephyr sings and I produce the music. It’s an act that is unique to India. You won’t find any duo like us here. We play covers from big names like Coldplay, Chainsmokers and other big hits.” Zephyr adds: “We’re also performing a whole set of originals and are looking forward to drop them with the Bengaluru crowd. I’m sure they’ll appreciate it.”
While Shayan explains that their music will give their listeners a festival experience, Zephyr says: “It’s going to be a neat mix. We are not just playing one genre. We do a range of covers, remixes and originals that migrate from pop, jazz, hip hop, progressive house and electro music.”
On their name and story, Zephyr says: “We formed the duo officially in 2015. It’s after my name Zephyr – which means ‘cool breeze by the seashore’. Our original music is very soothing and you can listen to it anytime and anywhere on your playlist. My name goes along with the kind of music we make. So we decided to stick with it.”
Shayan elaborates on their musical journey together: “Zephyr was into rock and I was into electronic music. When I introduced her to my music, she liked it. I asked her to add her vocals to my tracks and that’s how we started off.” Zephyr continues: “I easily connect to Shayan’s tracks. They’re very relatable. And although we started with covers and remixes, now it’s all about our music now.”
In the future, Shayan says affirmatively that they plan to go international very soon. “We are looking to hit the big stages across the world,” Zephyr pitches in: “We want to represent India on the global music scene. That’s our number one dream!” She adds that the space for their music is developing and growing well in the country. “We’re positive about our music’s future,” she signs off.
