Legislators threaten to launch dharna

The theft of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) from outside the office of Congress MLA Shakuntla Khatak in posh Adarsh Nagar here on Sunday morning took a political turn a day later, with her party’s legislators threatening to launch an agitation if the vehicle is not recovered within four days.

Jai Tirath Dahiya, the Congress MLA from Rai, said on Monday that the law and order situation in Haryana had deteriorated over the past three years during the BJP rule.

Stating that even legislators were not safe in the State, Mr. Dahiya said, “If the police fail to recover the stolen vehicle within four days, all four Congress MLAs from Sonipat would be compelled to sit on a dharna.”

Govt slammed

Launching an attack on the Manohar Lal Khattar government, Mr. Dahiya demanded to know how the government would ensure the safety and security of the common man when their elected representatives were not safe.

The vehicle was parked outside the office of Ms. Khatak, a Kalanaur MLA, when unidentified men towed it away with help of a car around 4 a.m. The entire incident was caught on a closed-circuit television camera. The crime spot is close to the residence of former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

FIR registered

Ms. Khatak said an FIR was registered in this connection but the police were clueless.

Rohtak Police spokesperson head constable Sunny said the rider in the area has been suspended and the investigation handed over to the anti-vehicle theft squad of the district police.
