Operations in public sector banks across the city were affected on Tuesday in the wake of a strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions against the government’s plans to merge several banks.

The unions have claimed that not much information has been shared with them about the government’s intentions to merge public sector banks. Other demands including immediate payment of money to those employees who worked overtime during last year’s demonetisation drive are also part of the strike call.

While private banks remained open for business in the city, the cheque clearing process is likely to be affected for their customers too. In public sector banks, almost all branch operations including cheque clearances, NEFT/RTGS transactions and deposits/withdrawals were affected. Online transactions, however, were not hit.

There will be a country-wide strike by members of the National Federation of Postal Employees on Wednesday. The NFPE is demanding the immediate implementation of recommendations of the GDS (Gramin Dak Sevak) Committee report, halt to privatisation, and a five-day work week.
