With the temporary check dams constructed using mud in Thammampatti having suffered damages in the recent rain, the farmers have urged the government to take steps for the construction of permanent check dams to prevent water from going waste during monsoon.
Following severe drought conditions prevailing in Thammampatti and its surrounding areas due to the repeated failure of monsoon, farmers were facing difficulty in undertaking farm activities.
The farmers of Thammampatti on their own constructed temporary check dams using tarpaulin sheets and mud at six places in 2015. They diverted the surplus water of River Varattaru irrigation system through the first and fourth supply channels to these check dams. The storing of water in these check dams helped in increasing the water level in wells.
Various parts of the district have been experiencing widespread rainfall for the last few days and the heavy flow of water in the supply channels damaged all the six temporary check dams. This led to the wastage of a large quantity of water.
The farmers have asked the State Government to take steps for removing all the encroachments along the supply channels and renovate them.
A permanent check dam should be constructed across River Varattaru on the vacant site, they said.
