To train college and school students

Thoothukudi will have a new indoor shooting range.

Apart from the existing open shooting range at Vallanadu, established by the police personnel, the Tuticorin Rifle Club has come forward to encourage youngsters display their talent in shooting.

The new shooting range is expected to come up on one-and-half acre at a site identified here, J.K. Patterson Edward, who has taken charge as Chairman of Tuticorin Rifle Club, said here on Sunday.

A resolution in this regard was passed during the annual general body meeting of the Rifle Club here on Saturday.

The much-awaited shooting range would not only serve club members but also train college and school students to reach national and international standards.

Even without proper infrastructure, several shooters had groomed themselves in shooting.

For instance, K. Barnabas of Thoothukudi and a member of this Rifle Club had earned laurels for Thoothukudi in the State-level shooting competition in veteran category thrice. There were many budding shooters like him and they wanted to excel in the game, he said.

During the annual general body meeting, Assistant Collector (training) Saravanan lauded the activities of the club for the last 30 years. He urged the club to focus more in providing opportunities to students in and around Thoothukudi.

Later, he distributed awards to shooters, who had taken part in shooting competition, and gave identity cards to new club members, Dr. Patterson said.
