Farmers’ team meets panel

Representatives of various farmers’ associations on Saturday met Parliamentary Standing Committee chairman Hukum Singh and submitted a memorandum.

A delegation led by former MLA Malladi Vishnu and Krishna Delta Parirakshana Samiti convener Kolanukonda Sivaji met Mr. Singh and other members of the standing committee, who are here to inspect Polavaram project.

The committee members who visited the Polavaram project on Friday camped here overnight and left for Thotapalli project on Saturday morning.

The farmers’ association leaders told the standing committee members to prevail upon the Union government to construct the Polavaram Project as per the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Re-Organisation Act.

The delegation said it had doubts about the State government completing the project. The Centre was not implementing benefits that were stipulated in the Re-organisation Act. It refused special category status to Andhra Pradesh and had not reimbursed the ₹16,000 budget deficit as per the provisions of the re-organisation act.

The special packages for the development of North Andhra and Rayalaseema districts had also not been sanctioned.

The delegation members said the Union government should ensure that transparency and quality were maintained in the construction of the project and that it was completed in the stipulated time.

The delegation wanted the committee to ensure that the Union government built proper flood banks to protect the capital city during floods and ensure that the sewage water from Amaravati (new capital) was not dumped into the Krishna without proper treatment.
