Collector Pravin Kumar urged the stakeholders such as the Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, HPCL and the NHAI to support the initiatives designed by the traffic enforcement agencies.
Addressing a meeting of the Traffic Advisory Committee, he said, “We had asked the PSUs to set up parking lot for trucks and only VPT had done so. We will again take the proposals to the other PSUs.”
The Collector also urged the participants from schools and colleges to start a daily road safety class for a brief period.
The stakeholder and general public poured their woes on traffic issues.
Most of them came out with the problem of parking and many suggested the immediate setting up of standalone or multi-layer parking.
Some complained that most of the shopping complexes were not providing adequate cellar parking.
A few people said the BRTS (bus rapid transport system) was not serving the purpose and urged the authorities concerned to see that the public transport system functions better. If the public transport system functions better then the load of private vehicles on the roads will come down, said a senior citizen.
People also suggested that the police should strictly implement the ‘free left’ in the city and provide proper walking and cycling tracks.
Police Commissioner T. Yoganand urged the people to follow the basic traffic rules and safety norms such as wearing of helmet and use of seat belts.
