Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital, attached to M.R. Medical College, Kalaburagi, run by Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society (HKES), has achieved another milestone by performing the first revision total hip replacement surgery in Hyderabad Karnataka.

In the surgical procedure, an artificial hip, which was implanted in the body of a 58-year-old farmer around six years ago through hemiarthroplasty procedure, was completely removed and replaced on July 22.

Basavaraj Bheemalli, HKES president, told reporters here on Saturday that the complex surgery was performed at a minimal cost of ₹97,000. The surgery costs upwards of ₹4.5 lakh in other parts of the country. Of the ₹97,000, the state government would bear ₹35,000, as the patient was a Yeshasvini card holder.

Alok C Patil, Joint Replacement and Arthroscopic Surgeon, who performed the surgery, said that Mahadevappa, an economically poor farmer from Umergi village, Afzalpur taluk in Kalaburagi district, had consulted various hospitals in Solapur, Miraj and Bengaluru. He did not undergo suggested surgery due to the prohibitive cost. “We were able to mobilise our resources and perform the surgery at minimal cost. We charged only for implants and have not included any other charges, such as doctors’ and nursing fee, hospital charges and operation theatre charges,” he pointed out.

S.R. Harwal, Dean of M.R. Medical College; Sharanagowda Patil, Medical Superintendent; S.K. Andola, Medical Director; M. Sadananda, Chief Medical Records Officer and others were present.
