The police have arrested former whip and Congress leader T. Jayaprakash Reddy at the district headquarters on Thursday and shifted him to Pulkal police station.
Mr. Jayaprakash Reddy had announced fast unto death demanding sanction of medical college for the Sangareddy district headquarters. He has been making this demand for the past three months and had recently held series of media briefings to highlight the issue.
Mr. Reddy commenced a rally from his house to the Collectorate where he proposed to commence the fast. He was arrested near the Town police station on his way to the Collectorate. A large number of party workers were also arrested by the police.
This issue had led to the ‘war of pamphlets’ between Mr Jayaprakash Reddy and the sitting Telangana Rashtra Samithi legislator Chinta Prabhakar, wherein both of them released pamphlets every alternative day, each claiming that their stand was correct.
Mr. Jayaprakash Reddy claimed that the medical college was sanctioned by former Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy. However, it was diverted to Siddipet district, since it was being represented by none other than the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao.
The ruling party has repeatedly said that the medical college for Sangareddy was only a promise and there was never any GO issued in this regard. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Jayaprakash Reddy alleged that the government had been neglecting Sangareddy district and suppressing people’s aspiration for a medical college.
