Rafael Nadal and Karolina Pliskova, the No. 1 seeds at the WTA and ATP Cincinnati Masters, never got a chance to break a sweat before play was halted Thursday at the rain-hit tournament.
Second-ranked Simona Halep of Romania charged closer to taking the World No.1 ranking from Pliskova by beating Latvian 15th seed Anastasija Sevastova 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
Halep can overtake Pliskova by winning the title in the final tune-up for the US Open.
Bopanna-Dodig through
Rohan Bopanna and his Croatian partner Ivan Dodig reached the quarterfinals after edging past Juan Sebastian Cabal and Fabio Fognini 5-7, 7-5, [10-8] in a second round match.
In the WTA event, Sania Mizra and Shuai Peng have reached the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-7(1) [10-3] win over Irina-Camelia Begu and Raluca Olaru.
