About 1,000 college students in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and the Nilgiri districts will be trained as energy ambassadors. The student ambassador programme was launched here at a function held at the PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore on Friday.
T. Haldorai, Chief Engineer for Coimbatore Division of Tangedco, said that the energy ambassadors would be selected from 91 engineering and polytechnic colleges in these districts. Each college was asked to enrol nine students and one mentor for the programme.
They would be given training on energy conservation and should submit their reports by November 30.
R. Rudramoorthy, principal, PSG College of Technology, stressed on use of renewable energy systems such as solar, and wind.
B. Somasundaram, national Secretary of Indian Association of Energy Management Professionals asked Tangedco to extend the energy ambassador programme to researchers, and professionals.
As many as 1,300 school students were trained as energy ambassadors during the last academic year.
