Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami also announces that Veda Nilayam, residence of the former Chief Minister in Poes Garden in Chennai, will be converted into a government memorial.

The death of the former Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, would be investigated by a commission headed by a retired judge, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced in Chennai on Thursday.

He also announced that Veda Nilayam, residence of Jayalalithaa in Poes Garden in the city, will be converted into agovernment memorial.

The announcements indicate a step closer to a potential merger of the two AIADMK factions - the AIADMK (Amma) and the AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma).

Mr. Palaniswami, however, stopped short of saying that he was conceding to the other camp's demands. Instead, he said that based on various representations from many different organisations, "an inquiry commission headed by a retired High Court judge will be constituted to investigate Amma's [Jayalalithaa's] death."

Announcing the conversion of the late leader's house into a public memorial, he said "to enable people know her achievements and sacrifices, Veda Nilayam will be converted into a public memorial and people will be given access to it".

'Victory for dharma yuddham'

Reacting to the development, K. Pandiarajan from the O. Panneerselvam camp claimed victory and that all conditions have been met.

"Victory for OPS dharma yuddham!  All 3 key demands by OPS met decisively ! Time to transparently negotiate for merger!", he tweeted.
