The India Meteorological Department in June announced the south west monsoon would be better than expected in 2017
The south-west monsoon is set for a revival in central and west India after a hiatus of almost 15 days.
The forecast of increased rain in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat in the next two weeks comes with the possibility of flood in some of these states. The rain deficit regions were also likely to recover after the monsoon revival, said M Rajeevan, secretary in the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
There was a break-phase this monsoon during the end of July after having a fairly good run for the first two months. Out of 36 meteorological subdivisions, 28 recorded either excess or normal rainfall since June 1, 2017.
Those with deficient rainfall till August 9 includes Kerala, southern interior Karnataka, northern interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka, Marathwada, Vidarbha and western part of Uttar Pradesh. The maximum rainfall of 93% more than average was witnessed in west Rajasthan.
The India Meteorological Department in June announced the south west monsoon would be better than expected in 2017 during which the country as a whole is likely to receive 98% of average rainfall between June and September.
Several states including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Assam and West Bengal witnessed floods in 2017 with the National Disaster Response Force rescuing more than 28,000 people so far.
