Last week’s Auto Focus had a detailed test drive review of the new 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. This flagship sedan from the German brand gets a cautious facelift that mostly focuses on upping the youthful appeal of the saloon and increasing the amount of new-age tech pre-loaded for improving safety and convenience.

The 2018 S-Class comes loaded with new technologies for enabling it to be rated a Level 2 Autonomous Driving vehicle.

A combination of adaptive cruise control, autonomous braking, lane keep assist, GPS and camera enabled traffic assistance etc, combine to allow the driver to experience full-on hands-free driving. But the driver has to put his hands back on the wheel every 30 seconds at least to let the system know that he or she is alert and in control.

Scan these QR codes using the scanner app on your smartphone for viewing two videos about the new S-Class. One of them is a demo of the autonomous parallel parking feature and the other video demonstrates the more complicated autonomous driving function where the new S-Class’ on-board system detects and calculates the speed of the cross traffic.

In this instance, it decides not to engage auto braking since the speed of the vehicle cutting across will enable it to cross the road safely before the S-Class reaches the spot.
