The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding with one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies Johnson and Johnson for research on a new medicine against tuberculosis.

The collaboration between Chandigarh-based Institute of Microbial Technology (ImTech), one of the constituent laboratories of CSIR, and Johnson and Johnson, is likely to centre on four new molecules that scientists from both sides identified as potential leads.

Johnson and Johnson have developed bedaquiline, the first new medicine against TB in 50 years. The company is now looking for more medicine against the disease that infected 10.4 million people in 2015 and killed 1.8 million.
