‘Demonetisation hits villagers hard’

Taking on the BJP-led NDA government at Centre, former MP and senior Congress leader Chinta Mohan has said the demonetisation hit hard farmers and the rural poor as they are unable to meet their daily needs due to an unprecedented cash crunch.

He has deplored that a sort of economic emergency has been prevailing in the rural areas with farmers not getting enough loans from banks and money going out of circulation among the rural poor who are not able to mobilise cash to meet medical needs.

Addressing a press conference after the party workers’ meeting at Gudur town near here, Mr. Mohan said that while farmers were unable to pay for fertilisers and pesticides required for cultivation, the poor agricultural workers were finding it hard to get even ₹10,000 for going to a hospital and to purchase medicines. He lamented that these economic problems of the rural people were mainly because of demonetisation and the absence of adequate money in circulation which led to dwindling credit possibility in the rural areas.

Major concern

Stating that unemployment was another issue of major concern, Mr. Mohan said that the BJP government had failed to fulfil its promise on the creation of jobs for every household after coming to power in the country. “Hardly anybody could get a job in the government here till now. Even the big projects like Dugarajapatnam port were not being implemented,” he added. Mr. Mohan lamented that the Dugarajapatnam port and the Mannavaram BHEL Factory in Nayudupeta and Venkatagiri areas would have created thousands of jobs for local people if the government took active steps for their execution. The BHEL factory was a mega factory initiative with the objective of manufacturing turbines and boilers for the thermal power projects. Mr. Mohan also criticised the government for what he described as negligence on the part of the Centre for not beginning works on the Srikalahasti-Nadikudi Railway Line which passes through the upland areas of Rapur.
