A Delhi Police Sub-Inspector has been booked for allegedly receiving bribe from the mother of a man arrested in April in a robbery case. The incident was allegedly captured on a mobile phone.
SI Bishamber Dayal accepted ₹20,000 in exchange for weakening the case, said the vigilance wing of the Delhi Police.
Robbery case
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 was registered against him at the vigilance police station on Monday.
On March 29, Nagendra, a 30-year-old mechanic, was allegedly robbed of ₹15,000 by three men identified as Bunty, Shahrukh and Shibu.
₹1 lakh demanded
After Shibu was arrested on April 18, his mother Qamar Jahan approached Mr. Dayal, the investigation officer in the case, asking him to go easy on her son. The SI then allegedly demanded ₹1 lakh from her in exchange for the favour.
Ms. Jahan pleaded with him to reduce the bribe amount, but he did not agree.
Shibu’s mother managed to arrange for ₹20,000 and went to the Khajuri Khas police station on April 26 to hand over the money.
As Ms. Jahan was giving the money to him, the act was allegedly recorded by the woman’s neighbour, Shabana, on her mobile phone.
Later, Ms. Jahan approached the police with the video clip.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) R.K. Jha said the clip had been sent for forensic examination and Mr. Dayal would be arrested if it was found to be genuine.
