Back after a long break, actor Aashish Chaudhary talks about what to look for in crime thriller “Dev”

After his short stint in Bollywood, it is his versatility on the small screen has made Aashish Chaudhary an adorable actor.

Ashish keeps pushing the envelope with every new assignment on tube and is now playing an investigator in Dev – Most-wanted Detective or Most wanted Criminal on Colors.

On the recent visit to Delhi, the actor was accompanied by Manisha Sharma, Programming Head, Colors.

“We have grown up on concepts like Karamchand which have pushed us to be cognisant of the happenings around us. Dev also makes us aware of our surroundings. The character is very exciting as he uses his keen eye for detail to evaluate the most mind-boggling cases despite the various judgements which have been passed against him because of his past,” said Sharma.

The actor, who showed his mettle in films such as Dhamaal seriesand serial Ek Mutthi Aasmaan, has returned to acting after a long break. Here hewill unravel cases which will range from the ordinary to the startling.

Excerpts from an interview:

How would you describe your character in Dev?

Dev is a very dash, rude, arrogant, extremely intelligent, always right and at the same time always bad.

He is a very complex character to play as well as nasty, as he has always been eccentric. He’s the most wanted detective as well as a criminal too. It is an honour for any actor to play a role like this.

Is there anything specific you want the viewers to know?

I want the viewers to know that this is not just a crime show, as here you not only see him as a detective appearing in a case, but his whole life. How he gets up, how he is with the people around, how he lives, whether he comes back home or not will be shown.

Why he got this kind of outlook, his personal life. I would say it is a fictional investigative crime thriller and all the real life stories which are actually true.

How did television happen?

After the success of Double Dhamaal, I moved to television and people got shocked. But 26/11 episode (he lost his sister and brother-in-law in the terror attack) occurred in my life. For four years I was away from the industry because of that incident. I had to find other ways of earning money; I was going through a bad phase. It was then television offered me something different and financially rewarding.

I had no ego because I had done TV before. In fact, because of TV, I got into movies.

What difference you find as an actor in films and TV?

TV is way more hard work and tiring, in movies we shoot one scene in five days but here five scenes are shot in a day. It is completely different in terms of how much energy and art we put in.

At the same time, it is way more exciting as our work helps us go into people's house. Even if they don't buy tickets, they do watch it everyday.
