Mall may face action over knife being sneaked inside

A day after a 25-year-old man was stabbed to death inside a mall in west Delhi on Sunday, the police arrested five persons and apprehended one juvenile in connection with the case.

Birthday treat

The police also hinted that the mall may face legal action for failing to prevent the incident in an area guarded by its own security.

The motive, meanwhile, is said to be sudden provocation.

Sajan, a driver, had taken his friends to the mall for a belated birthday treat on Sunday. The group allegedly consumed alcohol in R.K. Puram and later left for West Gate Mall. They reached the mall around 5 p.m. Sajan and his friends were dancing inside a club at the mall when he accidentally elbowed one Imran. This led to a brawl.

Imran allegedly called his younger brother Saleem, who turned up with four others, and they stabbed Sajan to death.

Stabbed thrice

The police claimed that none of Sajan’s friends came to his rescue though he was stabbed thrice. After raids at their possible hideouts, five persons and one juvenile were apprehended.

According to the police, Sajan did not know the accused. His family claimed he did not have any enemies.

“He lived with me and our mother in west Delhi’s Moti Bagh. He was the sole breadwinner in the family after I lost my job a few months ago. He was not the kind of person who picked fights with others. We want a fair probe,” said Babool.

The mall remained closed for probe on Monday.

On whether the mall management could face legal action for failing to prevent a knife from being sneaked into a crowded place, Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Vijay Kumar said the angle was being probed and that action will be taken in case of negligence.
