On Monday, a stuntwoman named Joi “SJ” Harris was killed on the set of Deadpool 2 after she lost control of her motorcycle. Harris, who was a professional motorcycle racer from New York (and also purported to be the first African-American woman licensed to compete in races for the American Motorcyclist Association), was performing in her first film as a stuntwoman.

Witnesses say that Harris crashed through a plate glass window of the lobby of Vancouver's Shaw Tower after hitting a curb and losing control of her bike. At the time, she was portraying the character Domino, and was not wearing a helmet. Additionally, a studio production source told Deadline that the stunt involved “two full days of rehearsals over the weekend, and on Monday, they ran the stunt five-plus times before filming.”

Harris's passing has resonated throughout the Hollywood community, with Ryan Reynolds, the star of the film, reacting to the stuntwoman's death from his Twitter account.

“Today, we tragically lost a member of our crew while filming Deadpool,” he wrote. “We’re heartbroken, shocked and devastated…but recognize nothing can come close to the grief and inexplicable pain her family and loved ones must feel in this moment. My heart pours out to them—along with each and every person she touched in this world.”

Monday’s disaster marks the second stunt-related death in North America in roughly a month, as stuntman John Bernecker died following major head injuries while filming an episode of The Walking Dead. Bernecker was participating in a fight scene for the show when he fell approximately 30 feet from the balcony he was on, missed a safety pad, and landed on the concrete floor below. Though the profession is a dangerous one, Bernecker’s death was believed to be the first stunt-related fatality in the U.S. in over 17 years.

As for production of Deadpool 2, it was shut down following the accident. As of now, there is no word on when it will resume filming.
