‘Students who have already taken the exam would be deprived of their chance to apply in other States’

Describing the Centre’s decision to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET-based medical admissions for a year as shocking, Puthiya Tamilagam leader K. Krishnasamy on Sunday urged the President not to give his assent to any ordinance that the State might promulgate to this end.

Addressing mediapersons, he said that it was unfortunate and unfair on the part of the Central government [referring to Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s statement] to express willingness to consider a year’s exemption, on the grounds that it had already passed a law in Parliament and even conducted the examination.

“Nearly 88,000 students from the State have taken the examination, of whom around 33,000 have passed. At a time when these students are eagerly awaiting medical seats, it was wrong on the part of the government to have spoken the way it did, and that too at the eleventh hour,” Mr. Krishnasamy said.

Plea to President

The President should not give his assent to any ordinance, he said, adding that even otherwise, he would consider challenging it in court.

Mr. Krishnasamy contended that if the ordinance was promulgated and the State exempted from NEET for a year, the students who had already written the examination would be deprived of their chance to apply for medical seats in other States.
