Neither vulnerable, West deals

North’s jump to five hearts asked about trump quality, in light of the auction. It was probably an overbid, but North had fallen in love with his hand. It was indeed a beauty. South, who hadn’t promised any points in the auction, decided that his hearts were good enough to accept. South put in dummy’s queen on the opening club lead, winning the trick. He crossed to his hand with a diamond to the queen, noting the fall of the jack, and advanced the queen of hearts. West covered, so South won with the ace, cashed the ace of clubs, and returned to his hand with the jack of hearts. He ruffed his last club in dummy, leaving this position:

With a near perfect count on the hand, South cashed one high spade in dummy and exited with a heart to East, who was forced to lead a diamond away from his 10, giving declarer his 12th trick. The opening lead of either the queen of spades or the jack of diamonds would have ruined South’s communications, but that would have spoiled a beautiful love story.
