To upgrade the training methods of Indian athletes for international events, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to open the first of its kinds sports university in Imphal in November.

The proposal of the university, with focus on sports science, was forwarded by Sports Ministry and approved by the Union Cabinet on Thursday.

“Talent will be groomed on scientific basis. The university will be at par with world level in its infrastructure and facilities. We expect it to attract the best talent from the country,” sports secretary Injeti Srinivas said.

The University will have courses in four subjects – sports science and sports medicine; sports management and sports technology; sports education and coaching and inter-disciplinary studies.

Students will also be taught about preventive and rehab science.
According to the proposal, the course would also offer specialised learning in disability and adventure sport in a four-year degree programme.

The university would look to stand out with its specialised programmes against the long standing National Institute of Sports (NIS), which offers a one-year diploma course.

The Olympic Games athletes, and those who have excelled at the international level would also be encouraged to join the course, even if they do not have a science background.

Srinivas admitted there was shortage of sport science experts in India.

“Sports science has not received the due focus. But it a field we can no longer neglect. We are aiming to produce bio-mechanic experts.”
