The article, “When the paradigm shifts” (August 11), laments the changes that the Modi government is ushering in. The author doesn’t recognise that national policies have to serve national interests and not the self-serving interests of a particular class, namely, the liberal and left-leaning intelligentsia. Some policies by previous government were implemented with the sole purpose of appeasing the minorities in order to get their votes. India’s foreign policy vis-a-vis Pakistan and China has also been steered towards a hard bargaining mode. We don’t just accept the other party’s terms, as was done earlier. What is wrong with that? This is how diplomacy and trade ought to have been conducted earlier too.
