Call to make scientific temper a fundamental right

Breakthrough Science Society organised ‘India March for Science’ here on Wednesday, with the demand for inclusion of development of scientific temper in the Fundamental Rights, rather than limit it to Fundamental Duties, and increased allocation of funds for science and technology.

The march has been organised taking after the world wide March for Science on April 22.

Addressing the march, CCMB former director Ch.Mohan Rao said people should acquire scientific process of thinking and that the government should encourage research on basic sciences.

Breakthrough Science Society State convener R. Gangadhar said that the present allocation for science and research at 0.8 % of GDP is very less, and demanded that at least three % should be allotted for better research and development.

A minimum of 10 % funding is essential for education, he said. Science courses in schools curriculum must be strengthened and the spread of unscientific ideas must be stopped, he said, and demanded the policies of government should be based on scientific evidence, a press release informed.
