In an early morning swoop down, the Karimnagar district police have foiled the fast unto death programme launched by TPCC president and former Member of Parliament Ponnam Prabhakar demanding sanction of government medical college in Karimnagar.
He Congress leader was arrested and shifted to the government headquarters hospital for treatment on Tuesday.
Mr. Prabhakar launched his fast unto death programme in front of his house from Saturday, following the denial of permission by the police officials. When the doctors informed that the condition of the Congress leader was deteriorated after the third day of the indefinite fast on Monday, the police formed into special teams and swung into action in the early morning operation on Tuesday and shifted Mr Prabhakar to the hospital in spite of resistance from the Congress rank and file.
However, Mr Prabhakar reiterated that he would continue his fast unto death programme even from the hospital till the government announces sanction of medical college. Meanwhile, Congress leaders and cadre have come on to the roads and staged dharnas and rasta rokos, condemning Mr. Prabhakar’s arrest.
Following the call given by the NSUI district unit leaders, all the educational institutions observed bandh and declared holiday to students.
Telangana JAC chairman M Kodandaram, several Congress leaders and others called on Mr. Prabhakar in the hospital and inquired about his health condition.
