Shivamogga City Corporation commences shifting of stray pigs

The Shivamogga City Corporation commenced the drive to shift stray pigs on Tuesday. Elumalai Babu, Mayor, said that in the wake of the outbreak of epidemics in the city of late, it has been decided to put in place stringent measures to eradicate mosquitoes and shift stray pigs.

On Tuesday, more than 200 stray pigs from Gopala Gowda Extension, Gadikoppa, and Vijayanagar localities were shifted to a pigsty owned by the corporation on the outskirts of the city. The operation will continue till August 11.

A team of four from Madurai in Tamil Nadu that has expertise in trapping pigs is in Shivamogga for the job. The members are catching the pigs with nets and shifting them to the pigsty on trucks.

Meanwhile, some pig rearers in Sharavathi Nagar locality staged a protest opposing the move. Mr. Elumalai said that notices were issued to pig rearers in advance asking them not to allow their pigs on roads.
