The Madras High Court Bench here on Tuesday reserved its judgment on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed against introducing public examinations for State Board students in Class XI from the academic year 2017-18.
The petition has challenged the government’s move on the ground that it would be too taxing for students to face public examinations from Class X to XII.
A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and G.R. Swaminathan deferred its verdict after hearing arguments advanced by the petitioner, K.K. Ramesh, an activist based here, who argued the case in person and Additional Government Pleader T.S. Mohammed Mohideen representing School Education Department.
The counter affidavit stated that 10+2+3 pattern of education system was implemented across the country as per recommendations of Kothari Educational Committee constituted in 1964.
Recalling that Tamil Nadu began imparting higher secondary education at the school level from 1978-79, the official said it was decided to conduct public exams only for Class XII students in view of the circumstances prevailing at that time.
