Police suspect she was smothered by missing live-in partner

A 26-year-old woman was found dead at her rented accommodation in west Delhi’s Inderpuri on Monday afternoon. The police suspect she was smothered by her missing live-in partner.

“The woman may have been smothered. Prima facie she was not sexually assaulted. However, the post-mortem report is awaited,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Vijay Kumar.

No external injury

The police said the house was not ransacked and there was no external injury on the woman’s body, leading the investigators to suspect the live-in partner’s role in her murder.

The woman, a native of West Bengal and a security personnel by profession, was found lying on the floor by her supervisor who went looking for her at her residence after she failed to turn up for work.

Separated from husband

“The security supervisor told us that she was supposed to start her shift at 3.30 p.m. When she failed to turn up for work, he called her. When she did not answer, he went to her house and found her lying on the floor,” said a police officer, adding that the supervisor called the police.

The officer said the victim, who has two children, was in the process of divorcing her husband. The children live with their father in Siliguri. The woman lived with an unemployed man in a JJ colony flat. “They were tenants, and had introduced themselves as husband and wife,” said the officer.

Her partner allegedly left for Rae Bareli on Monday to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with his family. The police are trying to establish his whereabouts to ascertain the sequence of events.

The victim’s parents have been informed and are on the way to Delhi from West Bengal. The post-mortem will be conducted after they reach the Capital. “Her body is at the mortuary. Investigations are on,” he said.
