Van Niekerk cruises through 400m, retains world title
South African Wayde Van Niekerk retained his 400m world title as he stormed to victory in a time of 43.98 seconds. The Olympic and defending champion dominated proceedings and was even able to ease down towards the end of the race.
Frenchman Pierre-Ambroise Bosse emerged as the surprise winner of the 800m race, Conselsus Kipruto continued Kenya’s fine record in men’s 3000m steeplechase and Barbora Spotakova won a second world title in the women’s javelin throw event.

Real Madrid outclass Man Utd 2-1
Goals from Casemiro and Isco gave Real Madrid a comfortable 2-1 victory in the UEFA Super Cup. Even though new recruit Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back for United in the game between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League, it was never enough against Madrid, who played the bulk of the match without Cristiano Ronaldo.

Shwartzman stuns Thiem at Montreal Masters
Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman saved four match points on his way to a shock victory over seventh ranked Austrian Dominic Thiem at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
In the women’s section of the Rogers Cup that’s taking place at Toronto, local hopeful Eugenie Bouchard was sent packing in straight sets by qualifier Donna Vekic.
