Steps to prevent spread of cholera at Mavoor

Unregistered migrant workers asked to leave panchayat

Mavoor grama panchayat authorities have claimed that they are taking stringent measures to avoid any chances for the further spread of cholera, after the disease was reported from one of the migrant labour camps in the panchayat.

The landlords accommodating migrant labourers illegally have been asked to send them back, as their living conditions could lead to the spread of the disease. “There are only a very few landlords who have provided hygienic living conditions to the labourers while in most camps they are cramped into small spaces with not even basic facilities,” panchayat president C. Muneerath said. Labourers who have not been registered with the local body have also been directed to leave the panchayat.

The local body has also taken measures to chlorinate wells in around 150 residences near the migrant labourers’ camp where cholera was reported. “Chlorination is being carried out for 10 days continuously,” she said.

Wayside eateries

The reporting of the disease has brought the focus back on wayside eateries in the panchayat.

“It was noted that many eateries functioned on encroached land, and that the food they supplied was not hygienic,” she said adding that action had been taken to clear all encroachments. Action would be taken against eateries that offered unhygienic food, she added.

Meanwhile, an intense awareness campaign is being carried out among the migrant labourers in the panchayat. The panchayat, with the help of the Health Department, has deployed doctors from the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, for the purpose.

The classes are held at night for the convenience of the labourers. There were also plans to conduct medical camps for the workers, and to provide them with health cards, she said.
