Fisheries department told to allot stalls in modern market

Chief Secretary Manoj Parida has directed the Fisheries Department to finalise and allot stalls in the modern fish market on East Coast Road and make it functional within 30 days.

Mr. Parida gave the direction to the officials at a meeting with World Bank officials on Monday to review the progress of tsunami rehabilitation work.

The bank had provided ₹350 crore for restoration and development work.

The work included construction of 1,100 houses, setting up a modern fish market and an effluent treatment plant at Fishing Harbour.

An official release here said the Project Implementation Agency had completed 830 houses and the modern fish market. Several other projects had been completed.

The meeting decided to put in place a proper mechanism for the upkeep and cleanliness of harbour. It was decided to procure more fire-fighting equipment and upgrade the emergency operation centre at Kalapet.

Ways to utilise the remaining ₹77 crore allocated by the bank were discussed.

The Chief Secretary directed the officials concerned to expedite the work on Marie building, construction of 10 work sheds and Nehru Market at Karaikal.

The expert team from the bank expressed satisfaction with the quality of work and the progress achieved, the release said.

The World Bank team, led by Deepak Singh, inspected the ongoing work such as conversion of low-tension overhead line into underground, construction of effluent treatment plant and the modern fish market at Kalapet.

Secretary Finance V. Candavelou and Project Director of PIA P. Parthiban were present.
