Mumbai: Investigations into the death of 63-year-old Asha Sahani, whose skeletal remains were found in her Lokhandwala apartment two days ago, took a new turn with the discovery of a suicide note in her bedroom on Tuesday. Police also found a bundle of demonetised currency notes, indicating she might have died around November last year.

Sahani, a widow, stayed alone in her 10th floor flat in Bellcost Apartments in Lokhandwala, while her son Rituraj lived in the U.S.A. Rituraj reached Mumbai on Sunday to find his mother’s skeleton, and informed Oshiwara police station where a case of accidental death was registered.

DCP (Zone IX) Paramjit Singh Dahiya confirmed a suicide note written in Hindi had been found. “The note’s content is part of our investigation, but it does not name anyone.”

An officer with Oshiwara police station said in the note, Sahani said no one should be held responsible for her death. The police have compared the handwriting to entries in her diaries, in which she had recorded her daily expenses and phone numbers of relatives and acquaintances. Sources said while the handwriting appeared to match, the note and diaries will be sent for professional analysis.

“We found a bundle of ₹500 notes in demonetised currency; there were no new notes in the house, which leads us to believe she might have died around or before November last year, which was when the Central government issued new currency,” an officer said.

Sahani’s skeletal remains have been sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory in Kalina for chemical analysis. However, with only the bones remaining, police said chances of ascertaining the cause and time of death are less.
