Fourteen students from districts, having overcome extreme financial stress to make their mark in this year's Madhyamik Examinations, will be given Rs 1.2 lakh each to pursue future studies as part of a scholarship programme.
The 14 students, hailing from Bankura, West Midnapore, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts were felicitated at a function last evening and named as recipients of Prerna 2017 scholarship.
The students would be given Rs 1.2 lakh as part of the scholarship programme, instituted by a leading corporate house, and would get Rs 5,000 on a monthly basis for two years.
"To know about their fight against financially challenging situations, it makes me feel willpower can overcome all hurdles. If given a little financial help, these young people can realise their dreams in life," popular Bengali actor and wildlife enthusiast Sabyasachi Chakraborty, who was present as the Guest of Honour, said on the occasion.
"This initiative will help the students meet the cost of higher studies," he said.
