One of the accused posed as CBI officer

Three men have been arrested for allegedly carrying out a dacoity at a jeweller's house in central Delhi's Karol Bagh posing as CBI officials last month.

The Crime Branch on Monday said the accused carried out the heist on July 26. On the day of the incident, seven men had gone to the jeweller's house. One of them, wearing a khakhi uniform, entered the house in the pretense of a CBI raid, the police said.

‘Held at gunpoint’

Later, all the accused allegedly barged into the house, overpowered the family members, held them at gunpoint and began searching for valuables.

A woman, who was on the top floor of the house, managed to raise an alarm and alerted the neighbours. The accused fled with some jewellery and electronic items, the police said.

A team was constituted under Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) G. Ramgopal Naik. Following a tip-off, three of the accused — Narender Vesnav (30), Madan (28) and Neeraj (38) — were nabbed near St. Xavier School, Shahbad Dairy here when they came to meet someone, the police said.

Accomplices at large

During questioning, it was revealed that Vesnav had entered the house posing as a CBI officer. Their accomplices are still at large, they said. According to the police, Neeraj used to run a jewellery shop in Bawana and owed several people money.

He used to visit Koocha Mahajani, Chandni Chowk, to buy ornaments where he learnt about one of the jewellers in the market and conveyed the information to other gang members, following which a plan was hatched to carry out the dacoity, the police said.

The accused purportedly disclosed that they were inspired by the Akshay Kumar-starrer heist film 'Special 26' and had got the idea of impersonating as CBI officers from it, they said.
