3 arrested on the charge of robbing ATMs in Mumbai

Three persons, including the cash custodian of a private bank, were arrested in the city on Tuesday on the charge of committing a series of thefts from ATMs in Mumbai in neighbouring Maharashtra.

According to the Cubbon Park police, the arrested persons are Rakesh Pawan (24), Nayan Vijay Bhanushali (24) and Jyothi Chadilal Gupte (22). Rakesh works as a cash custodian. He had managed to get the keys and passwords of ATMs in Mumbai where security guards had not been posted. The trio allegedly stole ₹34lakh from three ATMs.

With the stolen money, the trio travelled across India, visiting Delhi, Kulu Manali, Amritsar, Jammu & Kashmir, Goa and Pune before checking into a star hotel on Lavelle Road on June 23. In the three months since the robbery, the trio had spent more than ₹30 lakh.

It was their lavish lifestyle that was their undoing. The Bengaluru police were tipper off about three persons spending lavishly on liquor, gold, expensive mobile phones and hired cars.

The trio were picked up. When questioned, they confessed to the crime. The police were able to recover ₹4.2 lakh in cash, apart from gold jewelry from the trio. The Mumbai police have been informed.
