‘Krishna Darshan’ exhibition under way at Poompuhar

Idols of Lord Krishna made of sandalwood, Papier Mache, clay, bronze, brass, teak and country wood are on display at the ‘Krishna Darshan’ exhibition under way at the Poompuhar showroom in the city.

The exhibition has been organised by the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited.

The idols of standing Krishna, Krishna with a cow, Radha Krishna, crawling Krishna, Santhana Krishna made of Papier Mache and clay and Kalinga narthana Krishna made of brass are on sale. The Papier Mache and clay idols have been procured from Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Cuddalore, and the panchaloha idols are from Swamimalai.

The idols made of sandalwood are the cynosure of all eyes and they are priced between ₹6,000 and ₹12,000.

A group of artisans are involved in the making of teak wood and country wood idols at Thammampatti in Salem district. These idols are also on display along with the idols of white wood procured from the Poompuhar’s unit at Kallakurichi.

According to P. Balakrishnan, manager, Poompuhar showroom here, idols worth more than ₹10 lakh have been displayed at the expo, which will be on till August 16. Last year’s exhibition fetched a sales turnover of ₹3 lakh and the Corporation has fixed a sales target of ₹5 lakh this season.
