Nerul police on Thursday arrested two accused with 40 kg of ganja worth ₹3.91 lakh, making it the biggest seizure of the drug this year.
The accused have been identified as Gulam Maksood Ahmad Khan (46), a resident of Ambernath, and Mohammad Abdul Majeed Shaikh (20), a resident of Pimpri-Chinchwad in Pune.
The duo was arrested after Assistant Police Inspector Rajesh Gajjal received a tip-off about two men coming to LP Road in Nerul with drugs. The police laid a trap and nabbed them with a bag containing ganja.
Mr. Gajjal said, “We suspect they brought the drugs from Pune. The accused concealed the drugs under clothes in the bag. We hope to trace the main supplier.” According to the police, Shaikh has direct links with the dealer. The accused were presented before the court on Friday and have been remanded in police custody till August 9.
On July 31, the Anti-Narcotics Cell arrested Kalinda alias Kavita Hira Kurale (46) who sold ganja and operated from her hutment at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee in Vashi. Police Sub Inspector Rani Kale and team seized around two kg of ganja worth ₹21,700 from Kalinda’s possession.
Senior Police Inspector Ashok Rajput said, “Besides the Anti-Narcotics Cell, Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale has assigned work at police station level to curb the drug menace in the city. We always keep tabs of drug activities in our jurisdiction.”
